Spaldwick Common Ground Games Night – A Wonderful Evening of Community, Connection and Fun
Spaldwick Common Ground hosted a brilliant community board games evening. This was more than just a games night. It was a glimpse of what’s possible when we open up historic village spaces for modern, inclusive community use.
On Wednesday 21st May, Spaldwick Common Ground hosted a brilliant community board games evening inside the beautiful setting of St James’ Church, Spaldwick. The event brought together residents of all ages for a relaxed and friendly night filled with laughter, games, and connection — a true reflection of what our project is all about.
This was more than just a games night. It was a glimpse of what’s possible when we open up historic village spaces for modern, inclusive community use.
The event was thoughtfully organised with refreshments available for a small donation, and a generous spread of sweet treats and snacks kindly donated by Applegreen Welcome Break Spaldwick. Stroopwafels, flapjacks, chocolate truffles, crisps and more ensured there was no shortage of energy to keep the games going!

Tables were set up around the church for anyone to join in. Some chose classic favourites like Monopoly, Cluedo, and Chess, while others tried their hand at Backgammon, Magnetic Chess, What Do You Meme?, and more. Whether you were a grand strategist or just in it for the giggles, there was a seat for you.
Perhaps the best part of the evening was watching generations mix and mingle. They told stories, taught each other the rules, and simply enjoyed being together in a welcoming environment.
Parents and children, neighbours who hadn’t spoken in a while, newcomers and familiar faces – all enjoying each other’s company in a space that has stood at the heart of the village for centuries.

For us, this is exactly what Spaldwick Common Ground is about:
  • Creating inclusive events in the heart of the village.
  • Making full and creative use of St James’ Church beyond its traditional role.
  • Bringing people together to share in the kind of community life we all value.
And it’s just the beginning. As we continue to progress our plans to renovate and transform the interior of St James’ Church, events like this demonstrate the potential of the space to serve as a warm, flexible, and accessible village hub for everyone.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped organise the evening, to Applegreen for their donation, and to all those who came and made it such a success.
